Vennell Goes from Courageous to Aggressive on Day Three

Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California will definitely go on record as one of the highlights of this year’s season. After a long day and some tough climbs, BISSELL sprinted with the fastest cyclist in the world for an outstanding result, was awarded the Most Courageous jersey, and holds fifth place in the overall GC.

While riders have raced parts of this course in past ATOCs, tuesday’s stage introduced a new challenge which was Mt. Diablo. The 115 mile stage started abruptly with the Calaveras KOM coming only 5 miles into the stage. With the climb looming, Jeremy Vennell launched his attack along with Mike Friedman (Optum Pro Cycling) and were later joined with Friedman’s teammate, Sebastain Salas. Friedman eventually dropped off but was replaced by Columbian Coldesportes rider, Wilson Marentes, and Spidertech’s Pat McCarty. By the top of Mt. Diablo, this four man break built up a maximum gap nearing eight minutes; however, the varying motives among the riders caused some dissonance. With forty four miles to go, Vennell attacked and was joined by Marentes. Having shed their former break mates, the two were much more compatible and worked well together. They maintained the gap around three minutes until the chasing peloton led by Liquigas and Omega Pharma put the hammer down. After a valiant effort, the duo was caught on the banks of Paterson Pass. The peloton came into Livermore together and BISSELL’s Frank Pipp sprinted with the likes of Sagan and Boonen to finish twelfth. Chris Baldwin and Ben Jacques-Maynes also finished in this elite group. Ben’s solid finish places him in fifth place overall. Vennell was awarded the Most Aggressive jersey today for his gutsy work in the break.

It was a great day for the team who were rewarded for their skills and perseverance!

BJM Gets Most Aggressive Jersey at ATOC Opening Stage

The BISSELL Team started the Amgen Tour of California just as they planned
and raced a monumentally aggressive day.

In the opening miles of the 115 miles day, eight riders escaped off the front
and included two BISSELL riders, Ben Jacques-Maynes and Andrew Dahlheim.
Within the first twenty miles, the gap had already gained six minutes over the peloton.
The break was a good mix of teams, but BISSELL was the only team
that had multiple riders. “It was pretty quick and easy how the break formed,”
said BJM. “It was a manageable group. We were given the leash
and we had good cooperation. I think everyone was pacing themselves quite well.
We kept up a decent and steady pace for a couple hours, which was quite good.”
The front group contested two intermediate sprints, four categorized climbs,
and established a maximum lead of eleven minutes over the peloton.
On the second KOM, a couple of riders including BISSELL sprinter Dahlheim
lost contact with the break, but Dahlheim continuously tried to chase back
and refused to give up. It was the final climb and the toughest
of the day up Coleman Grade which really separated the front group.
After the last KOM was reached, the pace from the break began to fall off
and eventually there were only three leaders: Ben Jacques-Maynes,
Jeff Louder (United Healthcare), and Maxime Bouet (AG2R).
With 10 miles to go, Rabobank and Garmin came to the front to close the gap.
The threesome forged on but the gap was shrinking. With 4.6 miles to the finish,
the three leaders shook hands and knew their time on the front was expiring,
and it was gruppo compacto as they entered Santa Rosa city limits.
The BISSELL sprinters got into position; however, in the closing miles
a crash in the field stopped BISSELL’s assault to the finish.
The BISSELL riders made it to the line unscathed with the same finishing time
but were quite disappointed that they wouldn’t be contesting the Santa Rosa finish.

At the line, the Santa Rosa crowd applauded Ben Jacques-Maynes
as he was definitely the most aggressive rider of the day!
At the jersey presentation Ben said, “We want to be the most aggressive team
n the race. It’s exactly what we were hoping for.”

Standings for NRC shift after Battenkill

Two races last weekend caused big ripples in both the USA Cycling
National Race Calendar and the National Criterium Calendar standings.
Competitive Cyclist’s Francisco Mancebo, the 2011 NRC overall winner, reclaimed his spot atop the NRC rankings with a well-earned victory at Sunday’s Tour of the Battenkill, the second race of the series. The day before in North Carolina, UnitedHealthcare’s Hilton Clarke added to his NCC lead at the Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium, while Primal-Map My Ride’s Nicky Wangsgard took the women’s lead with her first NCC win.

Mancebo survives brutal Battenkill for NRC lead

Mancebo’s win at Battenkill, where well over half the field did not finish, boosted him
to a nine-point advantage over previous leader Phil Gaimon (Kenda/5-Hour Energy),
who won the series-opening Redlands Bicycle Classic but suffered a mechanical
in the closing kilometers Sunday and was the last rider to finish.
Bissell Pro Cycling’s Paddy Bevin did not race Sunday but is third overall based
on the strength of his three stage wins and second-place GC finish at Redlands.
Mancebo was third in the NRC standings before Sunday’s race.
In the team competiton, Bevin’s Bissell squad, which won this compeition last year,
moved into first place with 390 points after placing riders in third and seventh Sunday.
Optum-Kelly Benenfit Strategies claimed the second and fourth spots at Battenkill
to move into second overall with 358 points, while previous leader
Kenda/5-Hour Energy slipped to third, just three points behind Optum.
The NRC women did not race at Battenkill, and the standings remain unchanged.
Redlands winner Megan Guarnier (Tibco-To the Top), who recently placed third
at Ronde van Gelderland in the Netherlands, continues to lead
the individual competition by 76 points over Optum’s Joelle Numainville.
Alison Powers (NOW and Novartis for MS) is third with 155 points.
TIBCO also leads the team competition with 296 points, while Optum is in second
at 161. NOW and Novartis for MS is third with 213 points.

After finishing in second position in 2011, the former Italian Champion hits the victory. So came the first “foreign” win of the season for yellow-fluo girls.

Last year was Emma Johansson to burn on sprint Monia Baccaille.
This year the roles were reversed and the italian athlete has taken his revenge,
cutting the line in first position and forcing the Swedish to second place.
This time the sprint of Monia Baccaille was perfect
and the Grand Prix de Dottignies, after a year of waiting, it’s in its way,
with a sprint well prepared, thanks to an excellent team-work,
and masterfully directed. So arrives in Belgium land, the first win of the season
outside the Italian borders for the girls of MCipollini - Giambenini - Gauss Team
who, after many good placings, conquer the top step of the podium.
They do it at the end of a race lived, once again, as protagonists,
with yellow-fluo color to make the race. Marta Bastianelli after the start,
then Alessandra Borchi and Marta Tagliaferro have tried the sprint,
also to test the condition of the enemy, in a hard race consists of a series
of attacks and counterattacks.Failed all attempts to escape, the train
of MCipollini-Giambenini-Gauss goes into action to put Monia Baccaille
in the best position for the sprint. She doesn’t mistake and take
a well deserved rematch.“Finally: after the third and second place
I managed to reach the top step of the podium in this race.
I have to thank the whole team that has worked very well and put me
in the ideal conditions for the sprint”. Very pleased the Sports Director
Louisiana Pegoraro: “We went in Belgium to come back home
with something important. Yesterday, in the Ronde van Vlaanderen,
we have not succeeded, but today we have repaid our fans.
After so many excellent performances, not crowned by the final triumph,
this result is the recognition of our work.It was important for us
to get a victory, after the double Zorzi-Jasinska in Vaiano,
and to start winning even abroad of Italy. Surely this success
will give us the right charge to point to other important results”.

Bissell delivers Bevin for the win

Bissell’s Patrick Bevin added yet another victory to his growing list of wins this season.
“I knew I had good legs and would be one of the fastest guys left for sure,” Bevin said.
“So the guys sold out from the top of the climb and pretty much rode once we hit the flats.
They set me up for the finish in great position, and I finished it off for them,
so it was a good day.”

Friday’s long 120 mile Beaumont Circuit Race played out similar to past years
with the group staying together for the first of five total circuits.
On the second circuit a break of 4 riders got away
and built up a minute gap.
As the four leaders approached the KOM, the gap shrank
to only 10 seconds and group fell to three.
However, the power in the break was recharged with the addition
on an Exergy rider and the gap grew again to two minutes by the end
of the third circuit. Kenda manned the front of the peloton
in protection of their GC leader and brought the break back
by the start of the final lap. Almost on cue, the action started
with last year’s winner, Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist)
and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Kenda), making a brief but strong effort
at a breakaway. BISSELL came to the front in the final miles
to control for any late attacks. The BISSELL train was in great form
heading toward the finish. Bevin’s final lead out man, Pipp, was swarmed
in the final corner, but playing on his strengths Bevin was able
to come through on the slight uphill finish. He surged past his contenders
to take the win by several bike lengths. “It was just a matter of queuing up
at that last corner and just letting her go,” Bevin said. “To put a W on the board
is really satisfying. It’s great to have the BISSELL guys sell out for me,
pretty much, and all I have to do is finish it off. It makes my day pretty easy.”

The day, however, did not come without loss. After his great time trial prologue,
BISSELL’s Carter Jones started the day in fourth place overall.
On the second circuit, Jones crashed and was taken to hospital.
BPCT originally feared a possible clavicle fracture, but are happy to say
it wasn’t the case. A battered Jones was released and will be able to resume
his promising season after a bit of recovery.

Saturday’s Redlands Crit is another day for BISELL to look forward
to as National Criterium Champion Eric Young targets the stage.

all three race leadership jerseys for race overall, points and best young rider.

On a long stage packed full of aggressive racing, Bissell’s Patrick Bevin held onto
the Merco Cycling Classic’s yellow jersey to take home yet another
overall victory for his team here.
Exergy’s Logan Loder finally pulled off the sprint victory on the final stage
after falling just short on the previous two attempts. Loder topped
Optum Pro Cycling’s Ken Hanson and the surprisingly quick Tyler Brandt (Mike’s Bikes).

“It feels really good, not only for me but for the team. They worked so hard for me
in the past two days,” Loder told Cyclingnews.
“The whole race people were attacking non-stop. I’ve done this race four times
and this was the most aggressive I’ve ever seen it. With 1km to go every team
was putting someone up the road. We had Serghei Tvetcov up the road
with 3km to go with Zirbel, and it looked really good. It really made Bissell chase.

“Coming in, everyone’s lead-out trains were depleted and I was able to surf.
Freddie dropped me off at the front with 500m to go and we got swarmed,
but I was able to find the Optum train coming up and I hopped on that and rode it in.”
With all but two teams lacking stage wins, and Optum and Exergy in particular
out for the podium’s top step, even Bissell’s best attempts to reel in the usual
day long breakaway weren’t enough to control the attacks.
In the final kilometers Bevin was forced to cover a number of attacks on his own
before finally surrendering to simply finishing on the same time
as his nearest competitors and taking home the yellow jersey.
Bevin was more than happy with the work from his team, however,
and equally relieved to be able to close the deal after four days of intense racing.
“They started with more than a lap to go with guys throwing bombs,” he said,
and his sense that the other teams were trying to burn out his was corroborated
by the Optum and Exergy riders.
Yet the 21-year-old Kiwi was well composed as were his teammates,
and while he was forced to cover a few attacks in the finale, he credits his team
with keeping his legs rested for the critical moments.
“We knew that after you’ve ridden for that much time, you have to be on your game.
Especially me, I had that plum ride, and when it comes down to the last half lap,
it’s time to earn my keep and do my part. I had to answer a fair bit
in that last half lap to keep sticking it together. There was no need to do much else.
“The guys had been out there for a long time, and you could see it coming.
It was time to start answering, especially the late attacks from the guys
20-30 seconds down who can slip away. I had to don the gloves there
and get in amongst it, but it was no trouble because I had an easy day
being looked after so well.”
After successfully answering all the hard attacks, Bevin knew
there would be no chance to go for third stage win. “You kind of forgo
the stage win just to protect the overall, so at the end of the day
it was definitely worth it.”
In the final classification, Loder overtook Optum’s Tom Zirbel to take
second overall through the time bonus on the stage. Zirbel himself
had a mishap-laden race, frought with near-crashes and mechanicals,
but in the end nearly pulled off a coup when he slipped away
with Tvetcov with 3km to go.
“We weren’t going to be content with second place. We wanted to see
what we could do, but Bissell rode great,” Zirbel said.
“They definitely earned the win today.”
From the start of the 120 mile stage through blooming almond orchards
humming with bees in the warm sunny morning, the Optum Pro Cycling
p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies team was keen to put pressure on Bissell.
They put two men into the day’s breakaway after an attack-laden first lap.
Scott Zwizanski and Mike Friedman, both strong men against the clock, made up
half of the four-man move. They were joined by Austin Carroll (Simple Green)
and Exergy’s Conor Mullervy, and gained several minutes
before being slowly reeled in on the final lap.
Zwizanski explained that they were trying to use up Bissell’s train
but that his escape group was a bit too small to threaten them.
“We wanted to really make Bissell work for the GC, and to isolate Bevin.
It worked to some extent - he had to cover a lot of moves at the end.
But we needed a few more guys in our break. After being out there for 100 miles,
we ran out of gas pretty quickly.”
The team was able to take the lead to try and deliver Ken Hanson for the sprint,
but despite dropping him off at the right spot, he was overtaken by Loder at the line.
“The plan was to be as aggressive as possible to try and take the overall, and we put
all of our eggs into that basket, Hanson said. “I even put in a few moves,
so I wasn’t exactly the freshest at the end, but kudos to Logan, he had a great
turn of speed - he jumped with 200m to go and did a good sprint.”

Armstrong holds onto yellow
The women’s race wrapped up with no change to the overall lead,
with Exergy-Twenty12’s Kristin Armstrong also resisting repeated attempts
to overtake her in the points-based omnium.
Ina Teutenberg took her second consecutive stage win, once again topping
the best young rider, Joelle Numainville (Optum), in the sprint, while Armstrong
stuck fast to the only rider who could overtake her - Numainville,
and claimed third on the stage to secure her overall win.
After winning the opening stage’s time trial by almost a minute,
Armstrong admitted the points-based format, where points were evenly
weighted down to 15th, made it more difficult for her to win.
Separated by just one point from Numainville, she could only give up one place
to the Canadian who would still lose in a tie-breaker as long
as she did not win the final stage.
“The original plan was to just stay on Joelle’s wheel, but she’s a real sprinter,
and she’s okay with the bumping and the swarming - that’s not exactly my strength,”
Armstrong said.
“So I decided just to ride the front in the final kilometer, and let her come from behind.”
It ended up being a drag race, with Teutenberg hitting the front early
and going on to win, and Armstrong able to slot in on Numainville’s win to take third.
“There was a bit of pressure on me because the team did so much work,” she said.
The women’s finale consisted of three laps of the same 24-mile mostly flat circuit which,
lacking any strong winds, was less selective than normal. That isn’t to say
there was a lack of aggression, because the first lap was full of the same sort
of rapid-fire attacks which were seen in the criterium.
Specialized-lululemon attacked repeatedly, interested primarily in a stage win,
while Optum played its card in the form of Janel Holcolmb, who slipped
into a last-lap move with Lauren Tamayo (Exergy)
and Ally Stacher (Specialized-lululemon).
With Holcolmb only six points down on Armstrong it was a iffy proposition for Exergy,
but Stacher and Holcolmb were content to drive the move to go for the stage win.
However, their chances were ruined when a group of four more riders made it across,
meaning Armstrong would have to win the bunch sprint to hold onto her lead
if Holcolmb won the stage.
Exergy chased the move down, and only a single attempt by VC La Grange’s Julie Cutts
looked able to break the stalemate. The mother of eight from Las Vegas, race age 44,
who has had top placings at the Valley of the Sun stage race, attacked with 8 miles to go
and put 45 seconds into the peloton before Specialized-lululemon brought it back
with 5km to go.
“I know I had nothing to lose, and they had no idea who I am, so it was worth it,”
Cutts said of her hail-mary effort. “I was dreaming a big dream thinking I would win,
but oh well - it was fun.”
In the end, Teutenberg showed she is still the fastest woman on two wheels
by nabbing another stage win, but was disappointed that one of her teammates
who will have to work for the big names during the rest of the season
didn’t have a chance to shine in this early season warm-up. “It’s so hard, we tried
to make a difference, but Exergy does such a good job in keeping the pace up.
“We have big goals this year, and it’s best to just ride aggressively. We were happy
to have Ally in the break, because these are the races where everyone
should have a chance to get a win. There are so many races in the rest of the year
where it’s so limited as to who can win. These races, you’re happy
to have some of your teammates who work for you all year long take their chances.
“For sure when it came back together at the end they worked to lead me out,
because we don’t want to give up the win, but we were happy
with any of us in the break.”
Unlike Armstrong, who preferred the previous time-based stage race,
Teutenberg said she enjoyed the points-based omnium, which kept the top riders
close until the end.
“The omnium makes it a better race, otherwise you would have had
a minute in the time trial, but with the points it was pretty close.
It makes for better racing, and it’s a good way to have more girls come out.
There were good fields today and yesterday, and there were
constant attacks, it was fun.”

Wonderful Guardini: poker in Malaysia

Even the 8th Stage of Tour de Langkawi is signed by Andrea Guardini:
yet another pearl of yellow-fluo sprinter who, once again,
burns the competition to crown an excellent team effort.

CHUKAI (MAL) - In Malaysia, now, if you speak about sprint you think about
Andrea Guardini. After three stages who have seen climbers players, are back
faster wheels and Andrea “Flash” Guardini was not long in arriving.
In the 8th stage of Tour de Langkawi has forced him again,
for the fourth time this year.

The Stage, a total of 100.8 kilometers from Pekan to Chukai, was affected
by rain which made the path slippery and treacherous, but even
the weather conditions were able to stop “Flash” Guardini.
The victory was the result of Andrea explosiveness, but also of an excellent
work team by Farnese Vini - Selle Italia which, throughout the race, managed
to keep under control the advantage of the fugitives. In the final
Team United Healthcare has tried to prepare the train for Jacob Keough
but Andrea Guardini, very supported by Cristian Benenati and Thomas Bertolini,
was able to leverage the work of American Team and then burn them clearly in the final sprint.

Andrea Guardini, with today’s win (the fourth this year, to be added to the 5 last year)
has equaled the record of 9 wins Stage owned by Graeme Brown.
Tomorrow there will be the 9th Stage which will be resolved once more in sprint.

“Now we have to enjoy this success, but surely we’ll try again tomorrow”:
words by “Flash”, that tomorrow will be called on a date with history.

Third success of Andrea “Flash” Guardini in Malaysia. “Day by day, we win and fun”.

MUAR (MAL) - In Muar Andrea Guardini conquist his third success
after three days of sprints, in the race who becomes already “his race”.
Eight successess in two years, three in this season finally started for him:
Andrea Guardini is happy and sure that he has to think about next months,
in which he will have his most important goals of the season.

The third stage of Tour of Langkawi wasn’t simple: the four escapers
of the final part of the race (Crosby, Fukushima, Pollock and Reza) are taken
at 400 metres to the finishline, when the yellow - fluo guys
are already started the sprint. But Guardini doesn’t wrong the goal,
with a special sprint in which he has won alone. At the second place, Keough
meanwhile third arrived Harrif.

The six guys Farnese Vini Selle Italia are living a dream: Thomas Bertolini,
Cristian Benenati, Alfredo Balloni, Matteo Rabottini, Rafael Andriato
and Andrea “Flash” Guardini are working day by day for the same dream,
arriving to it. And until the end, since there are many stages
for the sprints, the are hungry.

Two days of intense work for the leader of Farnese Vini Selle Italia joined by Luca Scinto.
“Filippo already has a great mobility of the limb, he doesn’t feel pain and can cycle well.
We go to Belgium to test us”: words of the doctor, Daniele Tarsi.

“Yesterday more than four hours with 140 km, today five hours and 170 km of work
and 2000 metres of difference in level. We are very pleased”. Luca Scinto is quiet,
after the two days spent with Pozzato, working to test themselves, testing moral
and physical conditions, after the fall in Tour of Qatar. Ten days ago, Sunday,
February 12, the operation at the right collarbone and now three are the days
that miss to the important tests in Belgium: the Het Volk Saturday
and the Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne Sunday. “After the operation and the test
of Laigueglia, we go to Belgium to a test for the entire length of the race
- said the team doctor, Daniele Tarsi - so it is desirable
that Pippo should ready for Eroica, Tirreno and Sanremo. There are still
some days for those races, important for the recovery of the fracture.
The tests show that Filippo has a good mobility of his limb and feels no pain,
which is a help to make efforts and work by bike - concluded the doctor,
who will be in Belgium alongside Filippo – in Belgium we can see
how he will react on the whole race, but of course we will evaluate
what to do day by day, also according to the weather”.
Luca Scinto has the same opinion: “The great goal is still to be ready
starting from Trreno-Adriatico and, even though there isn’t a lot of time,
we believe to succceed. Filippo has a great motivation and a lot
of determination, moreover he succeeds in working well despite the fracture.
We continue to work to reach those goals”. The operation-recovery
continues as planned and the yellow – fluo team is ready to leave
for Belgian with Oscar Gatto, Luca Mazzanti, Pierpaolo De Negri,
Kevin Hulsmans, David Ricci Bitti, Roberto De Patre and Leonardo Giordani,
all alongside Filippo Pozzato. In flag ship there will be Serge Parsani.

Farnese Vini Selle Italia best sprinter will be’ at Tour of Langkawi 2012,
where he won five stages in 2011. “I hope to be lucky and to conquist
the first success of this season”.

Andrea Guardini return in Malaysia to win, after
a beginning of the season without goals but anyway really good:
“I’m sure to have done a good work in the winter, and Scinto too.
I’ll need only fortune to arrive at my first success. In San Luis
I felt good and I arrived near to the success.
In Qatar and Oman I had more difficulties, but I’m sure
that I’m near at the result”. The sportive director with the sprinter
who comes from Verona is Stefano Giuliani,

130 km in group for the captain of Farnese Vini Selle Italia “test perfect”
- doctor Tarsi told after the finish.

LAIGUEGLIA (SV) - “He should done 130 km and he has done it.
In the beginning of the third mountain we told him to go at box, because it was important to recover energies without stay at his max. But we are satisfied from this physical and psicological status” - this are the conclusion of Doctor Tarsi, the specialist of the team who was in car together to Luca Scinto, following real - time
the situation of Pozzato. “I’m happy for this test, I felt good and now I’ll work together
with Scinto (that will be with him for some days next week) for next steps.
I want to tell thanks to the fan in Laigueglia and the award for combativeness, I hope
to return for win next years” - Pozzato told. “I don’t know which races he will do,
but for sure we will work day by day trying to be present at all the races
of his initial program” - Scinto concluded, happy for the test of his team leader.
Regarding the race, Alfredo Balloni was in escape for the most important part
of the race together with other four riders, meanwhile Elia Favilli and Francesco Failli
were in the first group that sprinted for the second place.

Return records for talent of Sandrigo after the operation to the fractured right collarbone in Qatar Thursday, February 9, 2012 will start at the Trofeo Laigueglia race Saturday on the roads of Liguria.

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going” this saying is perfect for Filippo Pozzato, who after falling and breaking his collarbone Thursday, February 9, is ready to get back the number on Saturday in Laigueglia’s cup. In nine days, with an operation (Sunday) and have assets of four training sessions with one today. The talent of Farnese Vini Selle Italia will take part because: “I’ll race because I don’t want to lost the good work done, and because with Luca (Scinto n.d.r.) we decided it’s better this way. Yesterday he come in training with me, we did more than four hours with some specific jobs and the feeling I had telling me that I can think of the race, obviously intended as a workout” says Pippo, which comes with this action of law among the racers “hard” group. The reason of this race is to get back in lin e with the rithm of the group and test themselves: “One reason we thought to start with the Het Volk would not have been smart - explains the “Pitone” Luca Scinto, in his return to Tuscany after a day spent with its leader - and as with Michele del Gallo (Massager with Pozzato ed) Filippo feels better already, without contractions and with a tolerable pain, we have chosen this race. On the other hand, or we stood up to Sanremo, picking up plan as a fracture would require at a normal person, or is this the way back at the races soon”. Do not underestimate, then the psychological side of the matter: “Filippo is really motivated, wants to run, is aggressive - ends Scinto - keep it in place could result in him unnecessary doubts and misgivings. Better to have it concentrated in group, without taking risks and breathing the air of the race that leave him at home alone, running the same risks”. Pozzato is convinced, his physical therapist Michele Del Gallo also: “It’s ready, we would not run if it were not in place and within the limits of legitimate risks of a situation like this” Scinto even more. By accident remedied Thursday, February 9, returning from a record considering the mass campaign in the north that awaits the team: “And also why I can not escape to my responsibilities - Pozzato says - a truly united team around me with wonderful sponsors who have invested and pointed in me. I must return at once for them”. The floor now goes to the race: with Pozzato in race will be Luca Mazzanti, Elia Favilli, Francesco Failli, Leonardo Giordani, Rafael Andriato, Alfredo Balloni and Davide Ricci Bitti. For the others the race will be a moment of attacks, for Pozzato will be a workout, but always with the number on the back.

Record for Llanos - First for Cave

Eneko Llanos outdueled two-time ITU Duathlon world champion Paul Amey and broke 8 hours for the first time; Leanda Cave outdueled Linsey Corbin to win her first Ironman title as both women smashed the 9-hour barrier for the first time at Ironman Arizona.

Cave, the 2002 ITU Olympic distance world champion and two-time ITU long course world champion, overcame time lost to a flat tire and outdueled Linsey Corbin with a sizzling 8:49:00 time that topped the Montanan’s own personal best by 5 minutes and 33 seconds. The win was Cave’s first at the Ironman distance and comes on the heels of her breakthrough 3rd place finish at the Ironman World Championship in Kona last month. Corbin took her feat well, exulting in her very first sub-9 hour (8:54:33) performance that should have won had Cave not had a quantum leap of a day herself.

Like Llanos, Cave’s victory was not wire to wire, as Amanda Stevens broke into the lead with a race-best 48:43 swim that put 3:25 on Cave, 3:03 on Meredith Kessler, and 8:17 on Corbin. Stevens’ 4:51:51 bike held her lead as she gave back 1:40 to Corbin, 45 seconds to Cave, and added 1:45 to her lead on Kessler. Stevens hung stubbornly to her for one of three laps before surrendering the lead to Cave’s dominating, race-best 2:58:18 marathon. When the Cave’s run was over, the Great Briton outran 2nd place Corbin by 3:36, third place Kessler by 11:27 and the fading to 4th place Stevens by 24:54.

At the line, Cave’s 8:49:00 finish was 5:33 faster than Corbin, 11:14 better than Kessler, and 20:39 better than Stevens.

While all three podium women praised 2010 winner Chrissie Wellington for raising the bar of expectations for women Ironman triathletes, Cave’s impressive finish was still 14 minutes slower than Wellington’s 8:35 race-record last year.
